Don't use hospital casualty

Hello, In June of this year my wife and I had the unfortunate circumstance of hearing that our 3 year old son had an accident. A metal rod had pierced him in the groin area. We panicked as would any parent and rushed him to casualty at Entabeni Hospital. A month later we received bills in excess of R1, 000 from the GP and Specialist who attended to my son. When I queried why the bills were not covered by my health insurance it was explained to me that the GP was not contracted with Discovery and the specialist bill would only be paid if my son was admitted overnight. Our savings had already been depleted so no further funds were available. I do not understand how when in an emergency I am supposed to check with the doctor on duty (first) at a coastal hospital (covered by my plan) if he is contracted to Discovery and tell my wife that we better not use a specialist unless our son stays the night in hospital. Discovery is meant to be there in an emergency - it wasn't there for us. In future - we will see our GP - who is contracted and we are covered for - unless it is a life and death situation.
