IPhone 4S just out of warranty call failures

I bought my iPhone 4S in August 2012 and have kept it in pristine condition. Since November last year, it has been continuously cutting during phone calls. As recommended by the Istore, I tried another service provider to see whether it was a network problem. The same problem persisted with the other service provider proving that it is the phone!
I returned to the Istore to hear that I would be charged repair fees or had the option of paying R3000 to have my phone replaced by a new iPhone 4S with the warranty period as my original phone, therefore no warranty on a brand new phone.
I can understand if I was to blame by mishandling or dropping the phone, but I've kept it in pristine condition??? Surely there is a fault with the phone and apple should address the problem???
We purchased a quality product that unfortunately has not delivered the quality promised.
