Samsung Plasma panel faulty after 1.5 years

Electronics and household app.

We purchased a new Samsung 50" Plasma television (model ps51d451a3) from a dealer in Woodmead on the 15th of January 2012. Over the last month or two we noticed a fuzzy blue/purple band appearing along the bottom half of the display over a white/light background.

The Service Centre rep informed me that the device is out of warranty and that I would need to book a repair with one of the service providers. It turns out that it's quite a costly repair which will involve replacing the screen and/or some internals. I cannot understand how a new unit can simply stop working right after the warranty expires for no apparent reason when I have two other televisions (both LG); one 7 years old and the other ~10 years old that are still functioning perfectly.

I've researched the issue on the internet and it appears that this is a common and known problem with Samsung Plasma displays. I was also told that if I purchased my unit after April 2012 it would have come with a 2 year warranty(!!)

I feel ripped off and would much rather spend a bit more than I would have on the repairs and purchase a new (non-Samsung) unit.
