I would like to thank Canon for making such super strong lenses!
I arrived in Greece for a long awaited summer holiday, armed with my favourite possession, my Canon camera. On about the 3rd day of my holiday, while changing lenses, my Canon 18-200mm lens fell out of my bag and bounced down a cobbled road way! Not a sandy road, or grass, or wood, but the hardest surface you could possibly get. I was devastated as I knew there was no way my lens could have survived. I felt ill, too shocked to even cry. Someone told me to try the camera shop around the corner. I went there because I didn't have any other options, even though I knew they wouldn't be able to help. The front plastic ring was chipped off where the cap fits on the lens, it wouldn't work when I tried to take a picture, so I just prayed that I get over this setback.
The guy in the shop looked at the lens, fiddled a bit and said, it works! I couldn't believe it! He said the AF button had switched over to MF when it fell which is why it wouldn't take a pic. I left the shop a very very happy and grateful Canon customer. I thought it was impossible that it survived, but it just goes to show what a strong lens it is.
