Warranty HP8500 3 years not honored

We have returned our Printer, registered the warranty online as required by HP, to Chaos Computers in Willowbridge CPT that has a problem, they now say HP will not honor the 3 year warranty as advertised on the box, this was one of the main selling points of the printer. I feel this is very unfair. We also ended up buying a new HP printer because we cannot afford the downtime related to the HP support taking ages, will this prove to be a mistake that we went with HP again?
