Waste of my time and petrol

On saturday morning I phoned VW Claremont looking for a handbrake wrench for a VW Velociti. The guy in the parts department quoted me on the part, and I furthermore enquired what time they close that day.
I then proceeded to drive to VW Claremont to purchase the part I had phoned about, only to be told they no longer stock the part in question. Could they not have told me that over the phone? Surely if i am enquiring about something and ask about their closing times, it means I want to purchase the product. What did he think I wanted to come take him out for lunch after he finished work?
