Be careful of what you sign

I booked a rental from Tempest for when I was in Durban last week and requested the reduced liability (which you pay extra for) which reduces the excess payable to R5000. I normally rent from Avis and their "super cover" reduces the excess to R3000. I went to fetch the car and we went through and signed all the paperwork and the necessary credit card authorisations were done. When handing over the keys then another small piece of paper was put in front of me that I was requested to sign, on reading the fine print is increases the excess to R12500 if they deem it fit. I refused to sign this nonsense as that is exactly why I pay for the reduced liability. The manager then rudely said to the consultant to cancel the rental which we then did. WHAT AN ABSOLUTE WASTE OF MY TIME!!! By the time we finished cancelling and reversing the authorisations I was late for my client... Needless to say I went straight to Avis as a walk-in customer and was promptly assisted with the reduced liability and no little pieces of paper being shoved under my nose at the last minute to increase the liability... BEWARE OF WHAT YOU SIGN IN HASTE WITHOUT THOROUGH EXPLANATION!!!
