Buying of Vehicle

I entered into an agreement with H&M Steering to buy an Opel Astra 2L for R31000, and paid him an amount of R8000 as deposit to fix up the car for me to be able to drive with it. It's bought privately on contract on the 14th of February 2013.
Hennie said on contract that the car would be done on the 22 of February 2013. Car was not done yet.
Then the date changed to 26 of Feb 2013 on contract, and was still not done.
Then we changed the date verbal to the 25th of March. The date came and the car was still not done.
Then I added an extension on the contract where he signed and said the car would be finished on the 3 of April. But on the 3rd of April the car was still not completed.
I then said on the 22nd April I want to cancel the contract, because it does not look like I will get the car as nothing was done up and till date to make sure I can drive the car away.

He also said its fine and that I can collect my R8000 deposit on the 22nd April the afternoon or 23rd April in the morning.
As I got there he said no, and that he had done work on the car and that I can't have my money back. He also stated that I must sue him for the deposit.

All I want is my money.
