First National Bank
Frozen account without prior notice

Business & Finance

I was shopping, and when I went to the checkout my debit card was declined - we tried 3 times, with different machines (just in case) but with the same result.
I then went to the ATM and tried to withdraw cash, and instead received a slip saying "ACCOUNT FROZEN".

After calling the helpline (who were very helpful), I was told that my account has been frozen because my temporary residence permit has expired.
It HAS expired, but is in the process of being renewed at Home Affairs. My complaint is that, had someone warned me this was about to happen, I could have produced the relevant paperwork to prevent this from happening.
Instead, I am embarrassed in a store, and inconvenienced in general.
To say that I am VERY unhappy with this lack of communication is an understatement. I will seriously consider moving my account elsewhere if this is not cleared up in the next 24 hours.

It's shame, but this is a serious -up and a simple apology won't help. A warning to any other foreigners who bank with FNB - check when your permits are about to expire!! Take the renewal paperwork to your branch in advance, and hopefully prevent this happening to you.
