Standard Bank
Assistance in

Business & Finance

Payment was made on 2013-02-08 from a Standard Bank account. On Monday 11 February we realised the account number was incorrect as a digit was left out and the Standard Bank Internet facility conveniently added zeros in front of the digits. Standard Bank was immediately contacted and assistance was requested, we were advised that a "recall payment" can be done at a cost of R250.00. On Friday 22 Feb the bank was again contacted and we were advised that the funds were withdrawn and that since there are no funds in the person's account nothing can be done. Standard bank advised that the only way to solve the issue is to seek legal assistance in our own capacity to recover the funds.

A formal complaint was logged with the Banking Ombudsman, and a satisfactory outcome has still not been reached.

The greatest concern is that the Internet Banking system does not reject accounts created with insufficient digits but simply adds zeros to validate an account number.
