'Admin fees' more than unpaid debits

If anyone can explain this to me I'd be SO happy!!
A very short description of the story is this: I had about R500 left in my account. I know full well that this amount will not cover all the payments I need to make, but it's all I have. I thus left it there (instead of withdrawing it to put some diesel in my empty bakkie) and figured that the first debit order, at least, would go off and one thing would be paid.

Got a huge surprise when I checked my account: First in line was ABSA with a R1380 Admin charge (sending my account way, way into the red). Then 4 debit orders couldn't go off, for which ABSA charged me R138 each.

My biggest problem is this: Three of the d/o's are for R35, R55 and R210 - They would have gone off if ABSA hadn't taken that huge chunk of money. Then they have the audacity to charge me R138 x 4 because the debits couldn't go off. Now I am almost R2000 overdrawn, which no doubt will disappear out of my salary the second it hits the account - but be assured that they wouldn't grant me a R2000 overdraft to ensure that my debit orders could go of!!!
