Quality of smat chip on new visa creditcards

I received a new platinum credit card from FNB in August 2013. The previous ones' smart chip was faulty and I could not use the card overseas. 5 months later I have a similar problem with the new card. Is there any sane explanation for this? Must I just keep using my Mastercard?
