Whisky Live? It's Dead for Me

Business & Finance

As a seasoned campaigner and stalwart supporter of the FNB Whisky Live Festival for the past 5 years (or was it more?) I have tonight had enough.

I set off in anticipation to Whisky Live in Sandton this Friday evening, unconsciously gaining speed as I got nearer the arrival foyer, rather like bull elephants as they draw closer to the water hole.

I booked online as usual, hoping to avoid the crowds but it wasn't to be as I joined the longest line in the foyer. Ah well - a small price to pay. What, no vouchers? I was informed the credit card I was given was now the voucher - all 15 of them.

To cut to the chase - the whole concept of attending this event to discover some unknown wee drams, has not only become a money spinning exercise (R220 for a "normal" ticket - R1200 for the Lifestyle Lounge!) but also several of the Brand Houses have created their own "elitist clubs" by putting those distasteful red ropes around their stand and employed "stand managers" (bouncers to you & me) to create long lines, giving the appearance that they actually have something worth queuing for.

We won't mention the confusing chaos at the "cafe" but needless to say, I won't be attending again. R.I.P.
