Increase of Excess without my knowledge

I have had insurance with budget for a number of years, never claimed. My excess was R2, 500 when I took out the insurance, now a few weeks ago I was involved in an accident and the damage caused will require R15, 000 to repair. Budget first declined to pay because they claimed I had not had uninterrupted cover for the past 5 years, they later apologized and agreed to pay the claim, this after I told them that I will take the matter to my attorneys. So, they will pay my claim now as things stand. The problem, however, is that my excess has now been increased to R8, 200 from the original R2, 500 which had I agreed to when taking out the policy. This was apparently done to lower my premium - all this was done without consulting me at all. I never asked for a premium decrease/adjustment at the expense of increasing my excess.
