Absa
Credit card account re-opened without notification

Business & Finance

I closed my credit card account with ABSA in Oct 2012, in order to move to another bank. On 25 Jan 2013, I received a call that I had an outstanding amount that needed to be paid on my credit card. I received no notification from ABSA prior to this that my account was re-opened, nor was I notified that I had a principal amount still outstanding. So I had to pay 4 months interest on an amount I was not aware that I owed in the first place. I went into the Menlyn branch on 26 Jan and paid the full amount including interest, in order to close the account (again). From the branch, I then called the credit card division in order to close my account. I phoned through 5 times, and also had 2 branch employees phone on my behalf, but the call kept on being put down on the side of the credit card division. I then phoned them again on Monday (28 Jan) and was told that I owe an additional R17 because I did not close the account on the Saturday. It is grossly unfair that I have to pay for ABSA's inefficiency and negligence. Although I am not a client of ABSA's anymore, I was a loyal client for over 15 years.
