Relentless problems closing an account

I am having severe problems with Standard Bank to close my account. I was approached regarding the R99 Elite Account and still end up paying over R400 monthly on banking fees.

When I tried to close the account, 071455450, I was informed that I still need to pay R77 at the branch, which I did in an attempt to finally rid myself of this expensive way of banking.

The day after I was phoned by Standard Bank informing me the account cannot be closed because there is R9249.94 outstanding on an overdraft facility which I was initially informed that I don't qualify for and never used. Telephonically I was informed that drawing my salary shows as an overdraft transaction.

After this conversation I received an SMS that R9249.94 was transferred to Account 5450 and the balance is -R109.89, which I have no knowledge about.

It saddens me to know that this is Standard Bank's standard way of doing things and that to close this account will cost me even more money now.

I just want the account to be closed, yet I feel punished in terms of these additional charges I don't even know about.

Please help as I cannot be assisted by the Customer Services they allegedly employ to assist people.
