CLOSURE OF ACCOUNT USED FOR SALARY DEPOSITS

On Friday, 5 July, I received a call from a very agitated debt review client informing me that she was in the Durban Branch of ABSA Bank trying to withdraw the remainder of her June salary and she was informed by the consultant that she could not have access to her salary as the a/c was closed because she is under debt review. I promptly called the debt review department and spoke to Gabriel Hadebe who informed me that the account was not closed but a 'stop hold' was placed on the a/c and he will authorise the release of the funds if the client opened a savings a/c with ABSA Bank. I explained to Gabriel that it was imperative that the a/c remains open until the Dept is provided with an alternate a/c number.
The client opened the savings a/c and has today been informed by ABSA Bank that her July salary will be returned to the Dept of Education as her salary a/c has been closed! This is inhumane, to say the least as it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what a 10-act circus it will take to get the salary back from the Department. ABSA Bank is clearly acting in BAD FAITH and is displaying a total lack of consideration for their client, the National Credit Act & the CPA.
