I have a Platinum Cheque account with Absa (4073827534) for 5 years during which I handled it very well. I had an accident and had to do Total Hip Replacement surgery for both hips. Due to this I was off work for 8months and my salary was affected due to depleted full sick leave.
To my surprise Absa consultant called and said they will close my account, hand it over to lawyers and recover the outstanding overdraft because my salary has been lower in the past few months, which does not qualify me for the o/draft I have currently. She said she is not even prepared to review the account due to previously unpaid items over the past 4months.
I understand that it's the policy but how insensitive of Absa, by declining to put my account review on hold until I get back to work in less than 2months from now! A colleague who had a similar problem at another bank was accomodated so well and with empathy.
I guess my disability has caused me to be useless for Absa after such a period of handling my account well and using their products. Reputable corporations do accommodate clients in cases of unforeseeable circumstances, especially if the problem is very temporary like mine!
