On January 18th this year my house was robbed. A few hours later, the attempted to use one of the bank cards at the nearest Nedbank ATM. I immediately alerted the branch, spoke to the Customer Care manager, and informed them that I would be getting a warrant to view their CCTV footage. The warrant was duly served, and I was told it would take 6 to 8 weeks to effect. I protested at this, saying it was allowing the an 8-week window to commit more crime. The branch manager told me the footage was poor, but I said I wanted to be the judge of that. I had had a good look at the when I surprised him in, and even a poor picture would be confirmation enough. I found the Nedbank manager curiously reluctant to help, and asked him why the bank has cameras if they do such a poor job and if the bank is so reluctant to use the pictures. A short while later I was informed that the bank had wiped the tapes and the footage was no longer available. This was done in the full knowledge that I wanted to see the pictures, and in the full knowledge that a warrant had been served. I can only conclude that Nedbank is in league with house-robbers by destroying evidence.
