Unfair cancellation of ticket -Booking No: 32710

On 28th July 2011, I made a booking for 14th Aug to travel to Nairobi through Leana Vanderwalt of Rosebank Sta travel in Johannesburg. I later emailed her to request for a change of my travel date to 17th. Leana replied and informed me that only the 18th was available so in my next email, I requested her to keep checking for the 17th and only give me the 18th if she completely fails to get a booking for the 17th. I sent an email on 15th to ask if they had got the 18th but there was no reply. Then I called the office only to be told "sorry your ticket was for 14th and has been cancelled if you did not travel". I was devastated.
How does a ticket get cancelled when a client has clearly expressed that they wish to change the dates and this is allowed in your terms and conditions. I called the manager but she was not willing to listen to me. I reported the matter to consumer affairs but no progress so far.
I feel this was unfair treatment that must not happpen to anyone else, I am a student with limited means. If they are considerate in a professional way they should have changed my flight date and charged me for change of date because it was not even 24 hrs after the flight
