Why oh why

After booking two tickets to the UK cattle class we decided to spoil our selfs and pay for an up grade on tomorrows London flight we were expecting a cost but, to no avail the tickets we have cannot be up graded at any cost?? We would have to cancel and re book our tickets. That is a very very expensive way it is cheaper to fly with another air line and just not turn up for our Saa flight. And lose the tickets. It sound crazy .why oh why do they make rules that only they can understand?? I was happy to pay for an expensive upgrade one way but no, wrong type of tickets??
