Overweight

Traveling & Tourism

On checking in my wife and daughter on the Dbn - Jhb flight yesterday I was informed that because we had packed for both in 1 case and it weighed 25kg we would have to pay R250-00 extra as it was now deemed a "Heavy" bag. I can understand if there were 2 bags and we were over weight, but 1 bag and 5kg. We are saving space and not over the total allowance of 40kg for 2 people.
After reading all the complaints on Hello Peter about this and the standard response about baggage being 1 bag 20kg I found a response that from them which states that they want to carry less bags as it is more efficient.
Here is their response
"If we carry less bags there is less likelihood of damage and pilferage, another cost to airlines and unnecessary customer inconvenience and if we carry less bags, we create better efficiency as a result of loading less bags which impacts on our on-time performance."
This is exactly what we were doing, giving them less baggage and getting penalised for it.
They also talk about
"This new baggage policy had been brought about by the Piece and Weight concept that other airlines are abiding by."
If this was the case then why on the connecting international flight its 30kg.
