Ridiculous charges for using FREE Wi-Fi overseas

Telecommunications

I requested international roaming on my cellphone prior to my trip to Zimbabwe in December 2011. I dealt with a gentleman from the call centre by the name of George. I then signed a form for roaming which I sent back to George. On my return to SA I sent George an email requesting that the roaming be deactivated, to which I did not receive any confirmation, so I assumed that roaming was deactivated.

I went to Thailand at the beginning of March this year (2013), and when I switched on my phone upon my arrival I received an sms from SA and that is when I realised that my roaming was still active. And from that point onwards, I SWITCHED OFF the mobile data on my phone and continued to use the FREE WiFi at the hotels and restaurants in Thailand. I got a serious shock when my March bill came to a staggering R6000, for data usage. Now I am told by MTN that I should have taken out the sim card when using WiFi overseas, when I should not have been activated for roaming in the first place...
