MTN 3G / Data Service Nightmare - Northriding

I signed up for a 2 year (2gb Top Up) data package with a free Huawei E586 Modem, late last year.

I had done extensive testing with all South Africa's network providers at my home in North Riding to ensure maximum stability for gaming on International Servers - prior to entering into any contract.

Recently, (past 2 weeks), MTN's data service has become shoddy and has been a nightmare due to latency spikes for no reason whatsoever. None of my hardware has changed - the service is just as bad on my normal phone contract - also with MTN. Data throughput would just stop altogether.
Changing network modes etc. does not help at all - less than 3km away from the Dome in the valley.

I want to know what is going on and when, if ever, service will be back to running optimally? Are MTN undergoing LTE upgrades on the side and we all have to bear the grunt? Or is the "selling off" of towers now leading to severe congestion and poor service delivery, which all customers have to deal with?

The call centre agents and shop stewards don't even know what I am talking about as they are not technically clued up.
