Charging for canceled contract

Good day
i took out a contract last year sep with mtn in canal walk shopping center in cape town and the phone was un able to pick up signal by my house and so i took the phone back with in the 7 day return period, i got all papers to say that i had returned the phone and was ensured that the contract you be ended as there was no use on the phone.
To this day i am still paying for the phones contract and have been to the shop many times to try sort it out and was told now that i must pay the whole contract even though i dont have the phone and sim card.
This is out right and want it to be sorted out!
