MTN sim swaps, beware

Telecommunications

MTN please explain to me...
I have my MTN number for about 15 years now, and last Sunday I suddenly realized that my phone is not working.
Got an error "unable to register sim card", I phone MTN immediately and the operator told me that the sim card is faulty and I must do a sim swap the following day. The next day at the MTN while busy trying to do a sim swap, they told me that they can't complete the swap because my sim was already swapped the previous day.
I also used this number for my internet banking, and thought I might have been robbed as well, but luckily no one accessed my ABSA account. I had R171 of airtime on my phone and I was informed by MTN that it was transferred to another number by the. I stay alone and is very protective of my private information (I am also an IT professional), so it was impossible for anyone to have known my security question in order to do a sim swap. It was even very difficult for me to convince MTN that I am the legitimate owner after I had to answer the security questions. This could only have been an inside job and therefore I think anyone is vulnerable to a sim swap attack with MTN. MTN, how was this swap possible?
