Number has previously belonged to someone else

I got a contract phone from MTN on the 23rd September, the same day my MTN number was activated. After some days of using the phone I began receiving texts about some bank accounts that did not belong to me, i also started receiving calls from people asking to speak to some Bishop and most of the calls are coming from Nigeria. This has become a pain, because i constantly have to explain myself on "MY" number why I am answering the Bishop's number. This is irritating and i think very irresponsible from the supplier's side because they should do a thorough check on the use of a number before they hand it over to the next person, I would like an explanation on the procedure they use on deciding which cellphone numbers to recycle and since it is my first time using MTN, I am not very happy, i'm actuaally disappointed in this!
