Outrageous Roaming Data charges

With FREE WiFi in every airport and most hotels in the USA, I need to understand how a mobile service provider morally defends charging a fee of R 125.77 per MB for downloading e-mails?

We could not make a phone calls, that service did not work, but .the e-mails came through with the speed of white light. Would any sane person say yes to this kind of charge if they were made properly aware of it? I believe this fact should be as vigorously advertised as they advertise their phones when they are selling them?

I would love to know from anyone else out there who have been caught out in the same way. Thank goodness the phone did not work so it served no purpose. We made all our calls through Skype.[knowing how expensive calls are when abroad]. Imagine if the phone was working, and unbeknown to us the cash register kept raking in money for downloading e-mails!
