A R700 deposit?

Telecommunications

I phoned telkom regarding the installation of a landline at our residence. The lady explained everything to me and also informed that a credit check will be done, and if the rating is low or poor I would have to pay a deposit of R700 which will be refunded if I cancel the service. This is obviously no problem as everyone does credit checks.
Well, firstly, I recently purchased a brand new car, for which credit was approved, I also earn a good income, and I applied for an internet dongle a couple of months ago which I also pay monthly. I have two clothing accounts, as well as a credit card account and a mobile phone account which are all managed and has never been in arrears.
My credit rating is definitely not low, and I would go so far as to say it must be an exceptional credit rating.
As I will most likely not cancel the service for a substantial time, I am in essence throwing R700 in the water, which is completely unacceptable.
How is this even possible. All I want is a measly telephone line amounting to R185 per month!
