Uy back deals misleading advertisements

Can anybody at Vodacom tell me how the buy back works or is this just a way to upgrade your current contract.
As how understand it is that any one can bring his old phone in and swap it for a new phone, as per Vodacom advertisement but only to find only if you can up grade or prepaid change to contract. Looks that this is just a new way to upgrade your contract.
