Anything to get membership numbers

I signed up as a member at this gym a few years ago, before the facility opened. When it did eventually open they never bothered to communicate this. I have never even owned a membership card but they have been making sure that I pay for my membership. This is inspite of my numerous attempts to have my membership terminated. Everytime they changed a manager I had to start my complaint and request all over again about this matter. The last manager I spoke to had assured me that my she had sent my details to Brackenfell where their admin was being done, and it will be terminated. Last week I was shoked to find out that this never happened. When I enquired about the existence of my membership I was told that it is on a month to month basis as my 24 months period has ended and I must write a letter to terminate.

There must be some law protecting me against this, does anyone know where I can go for assistance?
