Membership Cancellation

I am very disgusted with how Planet Fitness operate! I signed a gym membership in 2009, they said if you do not give them a written letter after the contract expires the contract automatically renews. I did give them written notice that I do not want the membership renewed as I was already financially not in the position to pay the membership fees, due to unforseen circumstances. The membership was not stopped, I have know been handed over, and up until today they are still charging me per month, I've got people phoning me from a recovery company and my outstanding balance is more than R6000, I've made 2 payments this year of R1500 and again R1500 and still the balance is more than R6000, I can not afford to pay this and I did write another letter to the recovery company to say I want them to stop the membership and still they are charging me each month. I do not know how I am going to settle this, as I do not have the money and feel it is unfair due to the fact that I asked them to not renew my membership.
