They mess up and still ask for 50% of the bill??

December 2012 i kept on getting smses that my account is in arrears and i must go to my gym to sort it out, I went and spoke to Lauren on 26/01/13 i explained to her about the smses i've been getting she pulled my account details/plan and told me my account is not in arrears as of 26/01/13 so she does not know why im getting the smses i asked her to print me a copy and i also asked to cancel my contract, I filled in all the paperwork and she said someone will get back to me regarding the cancellation 1 month went past and herd nothing 2 months went past and herd nothing i assumed everything is in order after 5months and countless emails to the Planet fitness i get a phone call from there debt collection company, i went to the gym to find out and spoke to Lauren and Melani (I brought my proof) they said it's there fault as no one contacted me to tell me my contract cant be cancelled so now im left with a R2300.00 bill for there mistake, Today the collection company phoned me and told me Planet fitness wants me to pay 50% by tomorrow else i get blacklisted.. So my question is if it's your mistake why must i still pay 50%, why doesnt the person responsible at the gym have to pay?
