Continue to bill after cancelled contract

After cancelling my gym contract and paying the cancellation fee which in itself would have paid for 4 months of the fees. I had a debit order taken off my Ccard again. I was told by the Gym Manager in an ever so nonchalant manner that the contract wasn't cancelled. A month and a half prior to this I was called by their retentions department and told that they will give me two free months to see if can make some or other plan to get to their gym-I didn't. I signed papers and told them why I couldn't and didn't was to make use their service any more. I was also very specific in saying I DONT HAVE THE TIME but if they insist on giving me two free months they are welcome to do so. Apparently accepting the two free months meant I all of a sudden wanted to keep my contract and promptly began billing me again even though I would have still paid up until the end of July. It just strikes me as unethical and plain old chancing. If I didn't check my bank account regularly they would probably have just kept on billing me, irrespective of the status of my account. Now I have to pay interest on their charges and beg and plead for my money to be put back into my account.
