Sale items back at full price

It baffles me how one day you can walk into a shop to see an item at 50% off and the next day be told that the items are no longer on sale and back at full price. Not knowing the colour diary a friend would choose i bought a gift voucher for the price of the diary on sale at R300 to find the next day when i go with her to buy it, it is back up to R600. This seems slightly odd and sale stock should remain sale stock.
