When a warranty is not a warranty

Shops, Products, Services

Bought my son a Nintendo Wii in August 2012. In February 2013 we have a problem which they could not fix so they replaced the entire unit. A week ago we pick up exactly the same disk read error. I take it in on Saturday and I tell the person at the repair desk what the problem is. His first words are - "the warranty has expired". So I ask how this is possible considering the brand new unit was given in February 2013. He then tells me that despite having a new unit with new motherboard etc, the warranty runs for the period of the original unit. This makes no sense. They replaced the unit with supposedly a brand new one - it makes me think that perhaps they replaced the unit with a previously repaired unit in which case they misled us. A new unit should have a new warranty to match. You can't get a new product but keep the original warranty. He then tells me that I have to pay for the repair up front so I pointed out that as we did not know what the problem was this could be problematical. He then comes with some story about couriers and sending the unit here, there and the next place. So I walked out. There is no way an old warranty can apply to a new unit
