Sale return policy

I have purchased a few clothing items at woolworths when the sale was on. The one shirt that was purchased was a gift and is unfortunately to long for my husband. I went to return it today, only to find that i cannot return the sale items (final date 8/9/13). This is ridiculous!!! Now i have a shirt which i cannot do anything with and i have to keep it because they wont even exchange the item! This system is really unprofessional.
