CTM shuns R 6000 in favour of R 99.90

On 18.01.2013 I bought a shower hose for R 99.90 from Judith with the understanding that I could return/swap the item if it does not serve my purpose of replacing a worn out hose. The hose leaked at the fitting and was almost inflexible. I took the hose back and requested a refund or credit on an intended purchase of R 6 000 worth of tiles plus addional items like sement etc. I was told that it wasn't possible because I used it and should have brought it back in the original packaging. How do you test an item if it's still in the packaging??? I had to tear open the inner plastic but the actual display bag and carton were still intact. My request to order a flexible hose and then credit me for the new (tested) hose was also rejected. The hose is not damadged at all. I repeatedly asked the sales persons to call the stores manager for me but was eventually told that he was "in a meeting upstairs" and couldn't speak to me.
How does this work? I had the assurance from Judith that I could return the item and now was told that she would never say that to anyone. Am I a?
It would be extremely interesting if CTM have any return policy on anything? Penny wise pound foolish!
