Default on ITC without a contract

I was contacted by this company in August last year. I told them that I do not have a contract with the person that they are requesting the money for, and I am not going to pay it. Upon receiving my annual credit report, these people have gone and listed a default against my name. The biggest question here is the fact that they can just list somebody, and they have no proof?

I have sent numerous e-mails to them to fix this matter, but have not heard a word from them.
