Account handed ove

I received a sms out of the blue from Shapiro Shaik Defries & today advising that my account was. handed over to them for collection. It clearly states that I must pay them within 48 hours the outstanding amount. Now if this is not a subtle treat... after phoning the consultant at the firm quoting the account no in question and asking for more info I am told that Edcon last received a payment on my account in 2003, I mean 10 years without any communication to me I can now be reached. Edcon is part of the NCA and are not above the law therefore I first need to find out how is it possible that no communication was forwarded to me, Secondly handing me over to a debt collector without any warning, Then the Debt collector having the nerve to threaten me with "if you do not pay your account you will have a bad record" I have a clear understanding off my rights and request that I am contacted regarding this account, secondly the file withdrawn from the debt collector and the account written off.
