Loan made in good faith - still unpaid a yr late

I made a loan in good faith and it was promised to be paid back within a week. Nearly a year later I'm still waiting for even a token payment. I've been forced to use a lawyer. To take them to court or to pay over 3 months (and I have NO trust in that promise)?
