If its your mistake why should I pay?

Feb. 28th 2013 I received an email from Platinum Properties stating my payment due so I could move in. The email stated R2900 for pro rated rent for March and R750 Agent Fee and Month and a half deposit. I asked them what is the agent fee for and their reply stated, for paper work and credit check and agent services. So I naturally assumed that meant things would be done correctly. Well you know what they say about the word assume.
I made all my payments in good faith, received my keys on the Mar15 but was not able to move in until the afternoon of the 16th because the property was left in such a state. Dog poo, pee, garbage and pee everywhere.
I paid my April rent on time and then on April 10th, out of the blue on my invoice a fee for R280.65 so I naturally asked what this was for. They said "they messed up on" the pro rated rent for March and now I need to pay. They have sent me a letter of demand and charging me R150 for their mess up. I have talked to many agents and people and they all agree it is their fault and responsibility. Poor Client Care Attitude is shocking to me. I have tried to arrange a meeting but the phone was just put down on me. Please Help or advice
