My brother needs retractive eye surgery in order to negate the need for a cornea transplant in the future. We got a motivation letter from the Doctor but were informed by Discovery that as it was in afrikaans they could not understand it, and eventhough they could not understand the contents of the motivation they still found that the procedure was cosmetic and did not grant consent, We then did a translation and resubmitted the motivation explaining that my brother is a Sales Rep and spends 90% of his time on the road and after various tests at the Pretoria Eye institute it was found that he cannot wear contact lenses and thus the only solution is retractive eye surgery. Guess what, they did not grant consent but told him that he can use his savings account (which is his money in any case only given in advance by Discovery, no favour there) and pay the hospital fees himself. We informed them that we are not happy with their decision and intend to take the matter further to which they promised to email me a written explanation as to the reasons for non consent within twenty four hours. It is now nearly a week later and no word from Discovery.
