R13, 000 pay in per yr for my daughter's diabetes!

Health & Medicine

I am on the Classic Comprehensive plan at Discovery. It's been worth it, and I upgraded to this plan to make sure my 9-yr old daughter gets the best medical treatment, as a type 1 diabetic.

She has an insulin pump.

Up to December the cost for the consumables were R1500 per month, and since the Discovery limit for consumables is R14520 per year it meant I had to pay in about R3500 per year.

Now the price has suddenly shot up to R2300 per month, and the limits stayed the same. So this means I will be paying in R13, 000 to get the consumables per year!

Surely either the Discovery limits are outdated, or the supplier must be taken to book for the 53% increase.

I know Discovery is doing everything to keep its members healthy, and one would think that a member with a chronic illness would be looked after even better.

Yes, it can be argued that we could go back to the basic diabetes medication, but then she would be in hospital at least once a year. In the long term it would mean a lot more complications and isn't that what both Discovery and myself are trying to avoid?
