Bonitas
Customer paying for meds when on medical aid

Health & Medicine

I currently pay for the medical aid for my pensioner parents, as they are both unemployed. They are therefore on the most affordable package. ie. BONCAP.
My mother was sick this week, i searched online for a network GP she could go to. She visited the doctor and was given some meds at his rooms, but also a script for meds he did not have.
I then searched online for a network pharmacy, that she could get the other meds from, which she went to. She ended up paying R300 for the meds. I called the call centre to ask why she had to pay, only to be told that as the doctor she went to was a dispensing doctor she must get the meds from him or else pay.
I asked the lady, 'and what if he doesnt have it? ' only to be told that he needs to get it then, and then dispense to her. and what if its an emergnecy???
This process is most ridiculous. I cannot fathom, why she must pay R300 for meds, when i pay R1900 per month for her boncap premium?
This is not the first time this has happened. Bonitas makes it complicated and impossible to claim benefits - most probably as we are a 'lower end' customer
I am now questioning the use of this medical aid to my parents.
