HUMANE RESPONSE FROM FEDHEALTH MEDICAL AID

I want to thank the Board of Directors of Fedhealth Medical Scheme and especially Mr Peter Jordan Principal Officer for his personal involvement in granting me the use of Afinitor for advanced renal cell carcinoma. After several letters of appeal based on the excellent response to treatment, the Scheme approved the payment of the drug Ex Gratia as is it was not on the approved list of drugs for kidney cancer, despite the fact that it has been registered by the South African Medicines Control Council and several countries world wide. This drug has so far proved to stabilize the disease and has given me an excellent quality of life. For the first time in 4 years I have been able to go camping and do quite strenuous activities. Having lost over 7kg in weight before I started treatment, I have actually gained 8kg. I have paid the drug out of own pocket for 7 months now until reaching the limit of my financial ability. Reimbursement for cancer treatment via granting ex gratia approval of this expensive drug is therefore much appreciated.
