Why do we pay for medicalaid

Health & Medicine

I am a type 2 diabetic who has been controlling this condition with tablets for the last 10 years. In the last few months I've received a lot of cortisone injections due to other health complications and this has caused my sugar levels to become uncontrollable, sometimes spiking as high as 26. My specialist has prescribed insulin injections that seems to control my blood sugar 100%. The problem however is that my medical aid refuses to pay for this crucial and life saving medication, claiming my specialist needs to prescribe something cheaper (there isn't anything cheaper which matches the insulin prescribed). This doesn't make sense to me at all. Does my medical aid claim to be able to assess my medical condition better than one of the top specialists in the country or are they just so willing to gamble with my life? We've done the blood tests and submitted the motivational letters, but I still need to pay a substantial amount every month for medication I can't afford. Have they considered the cost of an ambulance, surgery, ICU stay and prolonged recovery time in hospital (and this is only if I'm "lucky")? What about the cost of a law-suit should I die?
