Poor Quality Samsung LED TV

I purchased a Samsung 40inch FHD LED TV in early 2012 and was given the impression that it had a 2 year warranty like all other major brands. Just over a year later and the screen is faulty - with a band across the top that does not light up properly when switched on. I contacted Samsung customer care on numerous occasions and they respond by saying that their TV's did not have a 2 year warranty and I will have to carry it in and pay for it myself - it was only after I purchased that the 2 year warranty on the exact same TV set came into effect. So the same product now magically has a longer warranty and all old (and previously loyal to the brand) customers must just deal with it and attend to the fault out of pocket. It is shocking that a Samsung product will develop such a fault so soon after purchase and then the customer is given the cold shoulder.
This destroyed my faith in the quality of the Samsung brand and after sales service considering all my major applicances are Samsung. I would expect Samsung as a global brand leader to care more about the quality of its products and its brand image. A friend has a similar problem with a Sony TV set and Sony had fixed it for him.
