Lg dvd to be returned

I bought a Lg 5.1 home theatre dvd 6009692817990 on 27 October 2012 from Game Menlyn. The display I get on our tv screen is poor. Since yesterday we are getting 00 displayed on the top middle of the screen and it hangs for 10 seconds before it starts working. I'm going to return it today. Why do electronics only last 9 months these days? My previous dvd player lasted for 7 years.
