Microsoft
Windows 8.1 Preview is worse than a computer virus

Computers & Services

After purchasing a laptop last year, including 100% legal and paid for Window 8 software, a few months later, when it was released, I downloaded the preview version of Windows 8.1. This version of the software expired on Jan 15 2014. After this date the software has code that intentionally crashes the user's PC every two hours if you don't download the 3.7 gigabyte update to Windows 8.1. Microsoft have failed to realise that the required update takes longer than 2 hours to download, so the PC shuts down part way through the download, which you then have to start from the beginning. Considering the number of times I have loaded half the update only to have to start again, at R29 per gig data cost, I estimate this fiasco has cost me 3 to 5 gigs (or R150) of wasted data per day for a week. I.E. over R1, 000 and I still can't use my PC for important work because it crashes all the time. How a company the stature of MS can up this badly is mind-boggling. How they can think it is acceptable to effectively hold their customer's PC to ransom by using malicious code in the operating system is a crime.
